Ebonyi State remains the poorest state in Southeast Nigeria- Report 

In the Southeastern region of Nigeria, the poorest state is Ebonyi.

According to multiple poverty rankings, Ebonyi's poverty rate hovers around 70–80 %, making it the only Southeastern state consistently appearing in the nation’s most poverty-stricken lists .

Comparatively, other Southeastern states like Imo and Abia also face hardship, but their poverty indicators are generally not as high as Ebonyi’s. For instance, Imo ranks around 7th nationwide, while Ebonyi is deeper in the bottom ten .

Why Ebonyi is so impoverished

Heavy reliance on subsistence agriculture with minimal infrastructure or modern farming techniques .

Shortfalls in basic amenities—poor roads, limited electricity, insufficient educational and healthcare services .

Governance and investment challenges—insufficient industrialization and poor economic planning .

Other Southeast states like Anambra, Enugu, Abia, and Imo have lower poverty rates, though they still face issues of underdevelopment compared to the national average.
