Many Ebonyi Indigenes Among Victims of OCHA Brigade Shooting in Onitsha
Fresh details have emerged about the identities of some of the victims killed during the violent clash between operatives of the Anambra State OCHA Brigade and traders at Onitsha Main Market.
Investigations and eyewitness accounts confirmed that at least two of those who lost their lives were indigenes of Ebonyi State. They include:
Michael Nweke, 37, who worked as a security guard at a convent in Nkpor. He hailed from Aguekka Village, Ekka Community, Ezza North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Peter Chukwuma Nwankwo, 26, an Onitsha-based trader. He was from Amaokpo, Nssakra Omege Community, Ezza South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Another victim identified as Mathew Ndukwe Kanu, 25, was an artisan originally from Ndiodo Community, Akanu-Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.
In addition, a woman named Chinwe Igwe was confirmed dead after being shot during the fracas. While her identity has been established, her state of origin has not yet been disclosed by authorities at the time of this report.
The clash, which occurred on September 9, 2025, left several others injured and sparked widespread outrage. Anambra State Police Command has since announced investigations into the conduct of the OCHA Brigade operatives involved.
